Steel Tip Darts
Both steel tip darts and soft tip darts, basically, use the same materials and they actually only differ in terms of their weight and the price tag they come with. Soft tip darts are often used on electronic dartboards which have sensors on them that detect where the dart landed and what the corresponding score. These electronic dartboards are most certainly not your typical board and not many people like them as much as they do traditional ones.
On the other hand, steel tip darts are used for traditional cork or wood boards. They have pointed tips to make sure that they poke through the cork or the wood and stay there. Whilst a soft tip dart is relatively safer to use when compared to a steel tip dart, many people seem to prefer steel-tips because they are a lot easier to play with.

Darts, themselves, can come in a wide variety of materials ranging from wood, brass, nickel, silver and tungsten. Of course, the weight of the dart varies according to the type of material used to make it.
In terms of weight, steel tip darts can reach up to 50 grams although varieties that are higher than 30 grams are a little hard to find. The most common weight for a steel tip dart is between 20-25 grams.
As for points for your steel tip dart, you can choose between two. The first if the fixed point which, just as its name suggests, is fixed solidly into your dart and does not move an inch. It is also one of the most common dart tips you would be able to find.
The second are the movable points which help in reducing the chances of a bounce-out. When you throw your dart, you would want to have the point fully extended and in the event that you hit a wire, keep your fingers crossed and hope that the moveable point would force it into the board instead of bouncing off and falling to the floor.
